The presenta tion will be given by Alice McGlashan\, about differentnest box designs\, m aterials to use\, and local native hollow using animals –birds and mammals.  \;
Alice has set up a comprehensive website\, Nest Box Tales\, for anyone who wants to learn about whichnative animals use tree hollows and how to make and install nest boxe s. \; There are numerous nest box design fordifferent hollow using anim als. She also runs a Facebook group\, called Nest BoxTales\, where people s hare photos\, experiences and ask for advice.
Over 300 of our native species inAustralia use tree hollows. Of these\, 114 or 15% of our native b ird species usetree hollows\, the majority for nesting purposes. Some bird species\, includingMasked Owls\, Sooty Owls\, Australian Owlet-Nightjars an d White-ThroatedTreecreepers also roost in tree hollows year-round. The ava ilability of treehollows has been significantly reduced across the landscap e by wide-spread treeclearing. Where habitat is re-growing\, there are few old hollow-bearing treesto enable hollow nesting bird species to breed\, or to provide hollow sleepingspots for arboreal mammals.  \;
Alice’ s talk will be ashow-and-tell presentation\, with a combination of videos\, nest box examples andsome background.

After the success of our last soil day with Dav id in October last year we are lucky to have him for a second time. David s tarted his career in commercial agronomy\, since then his focus has moved a way from sales and towards the nitty gritty of soil science. He is passiona te about helping other people understand their soil so they can make the be st decisions for their farm.
Focusing on understanding the structure of microbes in the soil\, the importance of fungi and dead matter. A day wi th David is an eye opener into what your soil needs which can often differ to what you are traditionally told.
Hosted by regenerative grazier Ky le Kimpton\, who's keen interest in understanding soils has motivated her t o host David again\, it is sure to be an enlightening day. DESCRIPTION:
It’sbecoming obvious that our climate is changing and this i s having profoundeffects on natural populations of plants and animals. Arid zonespecies are amongst the most vulnerable to climate change because they alreadylive close to their physical limits in conditions where access to f ood andwater is unpredictable. This talk willfocus on how birds from arid a nd semi-arid Australia are being affected by ourchanging climate. I will ad dress a series of questions: \; How are birdpopulations affected by ris ing temperatures? How widespread are effects ofextreme temperatures on surv ival? When do birds die in heatwaves\, and whathappens to the survivors? Wh ere do birds go in heatwaves\, and what parts ofhabitat provide life-saving shelter? This research aims to improve ourunderstanding of species’ sensit ivities to climate change and their capacity tocope with ongoing change. p>

WHO: Janet JanetGardner has a broad-ranging inter est in the Australianfauna\, especially birds\, and the threats posed by ha bitat modification and climate change. She spent 10 years working forstate government agencies in applied conservation research before completingher P hD at the Australian National University\, when she studied the ecology ofs peckled warblers\, a declining species\, in Campbell Park\, ACT. Since then \, shehas held a range of research and teaching positions at ANU\, Monash U niversityand the CSIRO where she started work on avian responses to climate change.
